Fourth Grade Curriculum

Reading Reading

Our reading program is literature based. Common novels read by all fourth grade students are: Journey, The Sign of the Beaver, and In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. Additional books of different genres are also read based on teacher and student choice. Skills are taught and strengthened throughout the year.

Math Mathematics

Students learn Geometry, Number Sense, Operations, Problem Solving, Patterns, Decimals, Measurement, Money, Statistics and Probability, and Fractions through the spiraling program of Everyday Math. The students learn through hands on experiences, math box activities, games. mental math exercises and math message investigations.

Everyday Mathematics - Family Letters

Science Science

Our science program is a hands-on exploration of four topics: Interactions in Chemistry, Interactions in Water, Interactions of Earth Materials, and Interactions in Wetlands. Students experiment, learn and use the scientific process, and explore the topics on field trips.

social studiesSocial Studies

In Social Studies students explore Map Skills, Immigration, The History of New Jersey, Government, Economics and Culture. These topics are explored by integrating texts and technology, are extended through literature, and expressed through aculminating performance activities.

writing Writing

Through the writing process and writer's notebooks/journals, students learn the craft of writing. The students explore and create their own written pieces in several genres. Poetry, memoir, fiction, non-fiction, and essay are some of the genres explored.

spelling Spelling

Students follow an individualized spelling program created by Andee Rolfe. After initial placement testing, students follow a carefully created leveled curriculum that studies patterns in language.

Handwriting Handwriting

Students are introduced to the cursive alphabet. At an appropriate time, students make the transition from manuscript to cursive handwriting. They begin to complete selected assignments in cursive.

Technology Technology

In the lab and in the classroom students learn and use different programs to link technology to curriculum. To learn about activities completed during technology class go to the grade four.
