Reading |
The fifth grade reading curriculum is based around authentic literature. The fifth grade students read and discuss a variety of novels through the use of literature circles. This model gives the children the opportunity to read grade appropriate literature, which tackles the many social and moral issues faced today.

Mathematics
|
Our math program is based around a curriculum that is both rigorous and balanced. The Everyday Math Program
emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills.
The program challenges students to explore the entire mathematical spectrum, not
just basic arithmetic. The students encounter skills such as: number sense,
algebra, measurement, geometry, data analysis, and probability.

Science
|
Our science program covers four units of study: Microworlds, Buoyancy, Animal Studies, and Solar Energy. Each unit is inquiry based and uses hands on activities. Students experiment and use the scientific method to explore each unit.

Social Studies
|
The fifth grade social studies curriculum allows the students to travel in time from the Age of Exploration to the European claims in the Americas. Children work as apprentices and learn a colonial craft during our Guild Day. Students then have the opportunity to demonstrate skills at our Colonial Fair. The fifth grade curriculum emphasizes the historical, geographical and economic factors, as well as the political and cultural relationships that helped shape our country.
|
Writing
|
The fifth grade writing curriculum focuses on the craft of writing. Students practice this craft by analyzing well-written pieces of literature. Students explore and create their own written pieces in their writers' notebooks, then move on to the publication process.
