October 2008

Math: This month we will be working on the Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers unit of the Everyday Math Program. Main topics covered are addition and subtraction of whole numbers, with emphasis of basic facts and their extensions; solution strategies for number stories; and addition and subtraction computation of multidigit numbers.

Social Studies: In social studies we have begun exploring the regions and landforms of the United States.

Reader's Workshop: We have started reading the novel The Courage of Sarah Noble as a class. Students will be focusing in on characters in their own "just right" books this month.

Writer's Workshop: Students have been writing "seed ideas" and in their writer's notebook and will be publishing personal narratives toward the end of this month.

Spelling: We are moving right along with the Instructional Level Spelling program! Please remember that each week students have a new spelling list and a spelling test is given each Friday.

Science: Students have already made terrariums and have planted three different types of seeds for our study of Ecosystems. This month we will be making aquariums to connect to our terrariums. The students will also be dissecting owl pellets to learn more about food chains.

Handwriting: We have already learned the Undercurve, Downcurve, Overcurve, and Slant strokes for cursive handwriting. This month the students will begin practicing their first lowercase cursive letters.
