November, 2008

Dear Parents,

November brings us to our first major assessment period with parent conferences, the end of the first marking period and our first fourth grade report cards.  We have accomplished so much in a short time together and we are really hitting our stride as fourth graders!

Life Habits are firmly in place and there has been great growth in reading pace and in response to literature.   In Writing we are using writing craft strategies in our Writer’s Notebooks.  We are working now to publish our first writing efforts and will have had our own “memoir writers’ celebration” later this month.  We have been working on writing small moments well—and you will be invited to that celebration which will be coming up before Thanksgiving!

Our study of Upper Saddle River has been interesting, and our Smart Board has allowed us a wonderful virtual tour of the historic homes and important town locations!  Our trip to the Goetschius House was a wonderful step-back-in-time which made the history come alive--thanks to the volunteers from the USR Historical Society.  Our next test on Upper Saddle River History will be on November 21st.

In Science, we are finishing our study of Earth Materials.  We really enjoyed our trip to the Sterling Mine!  After doing research in small groups, we are working on Power Point Presentations on Rocks and Minerals, which will proudly come home to you in a few weeks on CD--after we have presented our work to our classmates in Tech Lab. Our inquiry projects on Earth Materials are due on November 11th. This will be an exciting day of sharing the results of our independent research!

Math finds us moving into Unit 4 and working hard on mastery and speed of recall of our multiplication facts as well as development of our problem solving strategies with word and logic problems.

Heightened focus on Cursive will begin in earnest with the second marking period and we will shift to using it in all written work as of Thanksgiving!

As the weather turns cool, please be sure to send your child to school with appropriate clothing for recess and gym classes—portions of which are often held outdoors.

I enjoyed talking to each of you during our conferences.  I am always available via email at nmaher@usrschoolsk8.com should any questions or concerns crop up.  Visit my website at www.usronline.org for clarification of any homework assignments.  Homework is posted daily unless I am out of district at a workshop or at home sick!

Enjoy these crisp and fleeting November days!

***The Student Reference Book that I sent home, is to be left at home throughout the year as a reference for completing homework assignments. Please note that the page numbers do not exactly match up with the page numbers on the study links for the new edition of Everyday Math. Your child will need to use the Index or the Table of Contents to find the corresponding information for the homework. These SRB's will be collected again in June! Please help your child to find a safe and handy place for it, and for the packet of looseleaf paper that will be used for completing homework assignments as well!**
