Students attend Basic Skills classes based on the following criteria:
- formal assessments (standardized tests)
- informal assessments (teacher-made tests, observations, etc.)
- previous classroom teacher recommendations
- current classroom teacher recommendations
- previous year's Basic Skills teacher recommendations, if applicable
- current year's Basic Skills teacher recommendations

- fact families (addition/subtraction; multiplication/division)
- algorithms (addition, subtraction, multiplication) - grade 3
- algorithms (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) - grades 4 and 5
- rounding
- estimating
- number stories (single- and multi-step)
- measurement (standard and metric; perimeter and area)
- money (coin values and making change)
- time (reading an analog clock and calculating lapsed time)
- geometry (shapes and angle idenification/measurement)
- fractions and decimals
