Programs and Services

The Open Circle program provides all third grade and fourth grade students an opportunity to develop social competency skills during specific activities facilitated by their classroom teachers. The curriculum goals are to create and maintain cooperative classroom environments and to build positive relationships with the ability to solve people problems, thereby encouraging and supporting personal and academic achievement for all.

The Joining Old and Young (JOY) & CARE TO SHARE  are fourth grade intergenerational programs, which provide students & senior citizens an opportunity to get to know, appreciate, and understand each other.   Monthly visits to two local assisted living facilities encourage positive character building qualities in our students, and fosters a sense of emotional well-being for all. Additionally, local community seniors visit monthly with Mrs. Jareck's students to learn about the backyard birds of the Northeast.

Starting with a newcomers' welcome lunch, the Lunch Bunch program is a  daily grade level lunch time activity for some of our students.  In a small group format, the program's activities provide students varied opportunities to address common social issues, frequently related to peer relationships and communication skills. The main objective for these activities is to promote students’ overall personal growth and development. Often friendships flourish in this relaxed learning environment.

The Guidance Counseling program is an integral part of the total educational curriculum with the focus on understanding self and others while promoting the core character education values. The program includes classroom guidance activities, as well as individual and group counseling. Topics addressed may be for personal adjustment, interpersonal concerns, coping strategies, conflict resolution, effective problem-solving, and decision making considerations.  Individual guidance and counseling services are available to all students, as necessary and appropriate, not just those in a crisis situation.

Parent Groups are formed each year to discuss parenting concepts and concerns.  These small intimate groups reinforce the home and school connections for raising safe, loving, and responsible children.

News

Red Ribbon Week is about encouraging kids to be drug-free. This statewide celebration begins on October 23. 2007. The first Red Ribbon celebration was organized in 1986 by a grass roots organization of parents concerned about the destruction caused by alcohol and drug abuse. The red ribbon was adopted as a symbol of the movement in honor of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, an agent with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, who was kidnapped and killed while investigating drug traffickers. The campaign has reached million of children and has been recognized by the U.S. Congress.

The Mix It Up At Lunch Day event supports adults and students who want to improve the climate of our school by challenging social boundaries, cliques, and other group divisions. With this in mind, it will help us continue to make our school and classrooms a friendlier, safer and welcoming place to be for all, by mixing up our lunch time seating assignment. More than 2 million students across the country have participated in this national event since its beginning in 2002, and we are encouraged take part this year on November 13, 2007

Community Information

Intervention and Referral Service (I&RS)

An Intervention and Referral Service team is a multidisciplinary school-based problem-solving group. The primary purpose of an I&RS team is to assist teachers with strategies for educating students with learning, behavior and/or health related problems.  Effective I&RS teams seek creative ways to maximize the use of available general education resources.  An I&RS team consists of teachers, parents, a principal and a guidance counselor.  As necessary, basic skills teachers, a school nurse and Child Study Team staff representatives can be a part of an I&RS team.  At an I&RS meeting, the team identifies a student’s need and develops a specific plan to address the presenting issue.  This plan, referred to as an Action Plan, specifically address each student’s needs by including appropriate intervention recommendations, services and/or referral to school and community resources.  Each plan includes a time line for implementation and review.  The guidance counselor serves as the coordinator for scheduling and monitoring the Action Plan.  This I&RS process can be initiated by any staff member.  For further information contact Grace Sala @ 201-961-6322 or gsala@usrschoolsk8.com
