Summer Reading What's New "How To" Sheets

Check-Out Policy and Procedures
Third grade classes visit the Media Center once every cycle, six days. During their 20-minute visit, students are encouraged to browse for books or magazines to check-out for the cycle. Fourth and fifth grade classes visit the Media Center once every OTHER cycle, six days. During their 20-minute visit, students are encourage to browse for books or magazines to check-out for the cycle as well. To see when classes are scheduled for visits, feel free to visit the Calendar page.

Each time a class returns for their check-out time, they are asked to either return or renew their books and magazines. Students are allowed to have up to three items out at a time and are encouraged to limit only one item as a magazine. However, if a student is using a resource for a project, the number of resources can exceed three.

During the first week of each month, Overdue Notices are sent to students as reminders. The Overdue Notices list the titles of the books and/or magazines along with the cost of each in case it needs to be replaced. A book or magazine only needs to be replaced if it is lost or damaged. Otherwise, students can return or renew the resources that are overdue when they receive the Overdue Notice.

4th Grade

"Rocks and Minerals"
"Graph It!"
"Ode to Oldenburg"
Your group's task is to use the Internet and other resources to collect clues about rocks and minerals and how they are used. You will gather information to share with the other members of your group. Your group will have a short debriefing session when you are finished with your search. As a group, you will be looking for the answers to these questions: What are minerals? What are the physical characteristics of your assigned mineral? Where is your assigned mineral found as a natural resource? How is your assigned mineral used once it is mined from the earth? What are the three different types of rocks and how are they formed? What type of rock is your assigned mineral associated with? This information will then be organized by your group into a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint. Your group will then be ready to share the findings of your detective work with the community. (Written by Kim Barron)

5th Grade

"Million Dollar Project"
"Author Study"
Your group's task is to design a plan to spend $1,000,000. Such plans may include a way to save the rain forest; a plan to build new parks and playgrounds in your town; etc. Your group will use the Internet and other resources to collect information about how all of your expenses involved in carrying out the details of your plan will be included. For example, if you are opening a ballet studio, you must consider how many teachers you will need and how much you will pay them. Using Microsoft Excel, you will record, in an organized spreadsheet and graph, exactly how the $1,000,000 will be spent. Your plan and research will then be organized by your group into a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint. Your group will then be ready to share your plan and findings with the community.
