Summer Reading What's New "How To" Sheets

Bogert's New Technology & Media Program

As Bogert continues to keep up with the trends of education, the library has transformed into the new Technology & Media Center. Third, fourth, and fifth grade classes visit the TMC weekly to attend classes.

Along with the ten desktop computers, students also have access to eleven brand new laptop computers. While in attendance, students will work collaboratively to complete various projects such as "Letters to the Editor," "Rocks and Minerals," "The Million Dollar Project," or "Author Studies." Each project teaches students how to incorporate technology and utilize all the printed and electronic resources in the Technology & Media Center to collect research. Programs that are used for such projects include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and iMovie. Students will be using technology equipment such as digital cameras, document cameras, and projectors.

One of the goals of our redesigned Technology & Media Center and programs is to give students the skills necessary to use all available media to enhance their opportunities for learning.

New Books

Thanks to a generous donation from the Bogert School PTO, we received over 300 new books for the students and teachers to enjoy in the fall of 2007.

Author Visit with Ralph Fletcher
www.ralphfletcher.com
On Friday, December 7, 2007 Ralph Fletcher met with the third, fourth, and fifth grade students and staff at Bogert School. Ralph Fletcher is a talented writer of children's fiction, poetry, and nonfiction books. His fiction collection includes Fig Pudding, Flying Solo, Grandpa Never Lies, and Spider Boy. His poetry includes A Writing Kind of Day, Ordinary Things, and Moving Day. His nonfiction books include Craft Lessons for Fiction Writing, Craft Lessons for Nonfiction Writing, and Writing Your Life Story.

During each of his assemblies, Mr. Fletcher discussed his job as a writer, how he uses his Writers' Notebook, and shared some of his pieces of work. The Town Journal reported on the event. In Victoria Adamo's article (2007, December 13), she quoted Mr. Fletcher, "The most important book I've written will never, ever be published." Mr. Fletcher was referring to his Writer's Notebook of course, his "piggy bank of ideas". Ms. Adamo also interviewed some fifth grade students who shared their thoughts. One student recalled Mr. Fletcher saying, "I'm not a good writer, I'm a good reviser." The student went on to say what that meant to her as a writer... she can always revise her work.

It was a learning experience to have him here that the students and staff will never forget! A special thank you to the PTO for making this event possible.
