What is a "just right book"?

  • When I'm reading I sound like I am talking to a friend.
  • I remember what is going on in a story.
  • I understand the story.

What is fluency?

  • Readers read in a voice that sounds like they are talking.
  • Readers think about the meaning of a sentence or story and go back and reread and figure out the tricky part and go back and read it smoothly.
  • Readers chunk text to make it sound smooth.
  • Readers use punctuation as a clue to how text sounds.
  • Readers use clues in the text.
  • Readers use a storyteller's voice while reading.
  • Readers read with expression.

From Christine Lagatta

Comprehension is being able to:

  • retell a story
  • monitor for sense
  • determine importance of details
  • question
  • interpret
  • predict
  • synthesize (putting the parts together)
  • infer about the character
  • make connections to experiences in own life
  • envision (using prior knowledge and clues in text to formulate a picture of a scene in one's mind)
