School Procedures

Absences
Although attendance affects success in first grade, please do not send your child to school when ill. Children do not perform well when they are ill and can infect their classmates. Call Mrs. Donadio (ext. 6376) when your child is going to be absent. Work missed due to illness can be picked up in the school office at dismissal time. Notify the school in advance if your child will be absent due to a vacation. Class work will be saved and sent home when your child returns to school. To insure that your child understands concepts, please be sure to check and correct all work before returning it to the classroom.

Tardiness
School begins promptly at 8:05. Children arriving at school late must go directly to the attendance office for a late pass.

Snack
Please pack a
nutritious snack for your child each day. The children need a mid-morning energy boost. Fruits, vegetables, cheese, crackers, popcorn, yogurt, pretzels, nuts, muffins, and sunflower seeds are all good snacks. Sweet treats and greasy snacks, like chips, will be saved for lunch.

Recess
Please provide your child with appropriate clothing for outdoor recess. Check the thermometer before leaving for school each morning. Dressing in layers is recommended. Also remember that children play actively and need safe footwear.

Dismissal
Please send a note to notify the teacher of a change in dismissal routine. Children without notes will be sent home their usual way. Scheduled early dismissals for car children will be at 12:30.

Medications
It is against school policy for children to take medicine by themselves. All medications must be dispensed by the school nurse.

Possessions
Labeling clothing, backpacks, lunch boxes, and personal items will insure that your child will return home with his own possessions.

Folders
Notices and classwork will be sent home in a special folder. Please check and empty the folder daily. This is your link to the classroom.

Borrowing Books
Children are encouraged to borrow books from the classroom library daily. Books are to be returned in the Zip Lock bag the next morning. Please help your child to find a quiet place to read and a safe place to keep borrowed books.

Homework
At the beginning of the year, first grade homework assignments consist of reading at home. Written homework assignments will begin in September. The primary purpose of homework is to teach responsibility and reinforce concepts taught in school. Assignments should not take more than twenty minutes and are due the following morning. Please provide your child with a quiet time and place to work.

Birthdays
Party invitations may be distributed in class only when the entire class is invited. If you would like to send in a birthday treat, notify the teacher in advance. Choose
nutritious finger foods in individual servings (fresh fruit, popcorn, pretzels, plain cookies). Reynolds School policy discourages sugary treats such as: candy, frosted cupcakes, frosted donuts and frosted cookies. Beverages, goodie bags and party favors are not allowed. Please provide plates or napkins.  Why not consider a lasting treat?  Donate a book to the classroom library. Inscribe it with your child's name and birthday so that future classes can celebrate this special day.

Halloween
Children must bring their Halloween costume to school in the morning. Avoid tears! Don't wait until parade time to deliver your child's costume.

Visitations
All parents must report to the office when visiting the school. Minimize disruptions. If you have a lunch, homework, library books or any other items, please leave them in the office for your child to pick up at a convenient time. When volunteering in the school be sure to pick up a Visitor's Pass.

Conferences
If you need to meet with your child's teacher, please schedule a conference through the office. Regular conferences will be held in November. An evening conference can be scheduled
if neither parent is able to attend a daytime appointment. Your cooperation would be appreciated.
