Math

Second Graders will take an end of year assessment to evaluate math progress. Students will prepare for third grade by working on trade-first subtraction and multiplication and division readiness. They will also continue to build fact power of their basic math facts. Students are encouraged to play the Everyday Math Games over the summer to reinforce basic facts. Have your second grader show you how to play addition top-it, coin top-it, fraction top-it, and target number, in addition to any of the math games from this year.

Language Arts

Students are working to prepare for summer reading and reflection. Readers will begin by thinking about their favorite books and authors from the year. They will go back to reread these old favorites, and study how their thinking has changed. Students will then create goals for themselves for the summer so that they maintain all of the progress made this year. Goals will be sent home this month so that parents may help children progress.

Students revise and publish their nonfiction profile all about a special person. Laptop computers will be used to type pieces and tools such as formatting, word art, and text boxes will be explored.

Science

Our organism study will conclude this month. Students have planted seeds in the classroom. We will have "pets" this month...millipedes, beetles, and pill bugs will live in a controlled habitat. Second graders will also observe organisms in terrariums and aquariums. They are recording their observations in a science journal.
