In Math...

 Everyday Mathematics Parent Letters

Second Grade Math Games

For the last month, we will be completing Unit 10, which focuses on Decimals and Place Value.  The children will be learning how to use parenthesis in number models.  They will have to complete the work in the parenthesis first and then go on to figure out the rest of the problem.  There is a lot of strategy and problem solving involved in completing these kinds of problems.  The children will love it!  We will also be heading into Unit 11, which will give children more of an opportunity to use their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills.

Then we will be reviewing previously taught skills while I assess the children on their knowledge of the information taught during their second grade experience!

In Reading...

The children have been involved in “Book Buddy Book Clubs”!  They have been reading the same book as their buddy and then having a variety of conversations about it.  The children first meet with their buddy or group and set a goal for their reading time.  Then they come together and discuss the pages read.  The children have also been writing down their thoughts and reactions to discuss and share during their conversations.  These activities have promoted the children to use their comprehensions skills and deeper thinking skills such as inference.  During the summer, continue to have your child read and talk about their books!  A book club with friends or at the local library would be a great idea!

In Writing...

We had a wonderful time having you in our room for our Pride in America Day!  Being able to share some of the writing done this year was something the children were very excited about!  The time and hard work that the children have been putting into their writing is evident and they have each grown as a writer this year!  I am so proud of them!

Our writing continues daily!  This will include our end of the year Yearbooks.  Each child will have his/her own book to take with them as a keepsake of their memories of second grade.  They will all write a special message in each other’s books, as well as, complete some memory pages.  It is a very special book and I treasure mine each year!

In Spelling...

We will complete our year with a few more spelling lists.  The children will be exploring more prefixes and suffixes.  At the conclusion of our spelling studies, the children will receive a final spelling list and test that is a review of the entire year.  It would be great to continue reviewing their lists throughout the summer to get them ready for their third grade lists.

In Social Studies...

We will continue to look at our country and the world around us by working on Map Skills.  This will include the study of the seven continents, four oceans, directionality and boundaries.

Open Circle lessons continue to be a valuable part of our week and it is my hope that they will take what they learned and use it in their daily lives.

In Science...

The children seem very excited about their dioramas.  We will “transform” our room into a zoo and the students will be the zookeepers.  They will read the information they have written to everyone that comes to visit our zoo.  We are very excited about this.
We are also excited because we will soon be receiving some animals for our aquarium and terrarium.  We will be observing guppies, snails.  We might even get some millipedes or bess beetles!
