June News

It’s hard to believe, but we have reached the last month of school! This month is full of fun and exciting activities to wrap up our study of the alphabet as the organizer for the skills, core knowledge, and confidence building that will serve the children so well as they move on to the challenges that await them next year in Kindergarten.

We begin the month with Xx and concentrate on reading it at the end of a word. We record patterns with X in the correlating colors. We use Xes to record data from a page of pictures ending in /x/. We do addition and subtraction with linking cubes to find different ways of getting to six. Finally, we read about X-rays and view some real X-rays of teeth, the hand, and the spinal cord.

We zip through /z/ practicing zigzags on zebras and connecting zeros. We review the concept of zero in addition and subtraction. We use zebra stripes to review one to one correspondence and number formation. We enjoy the silly rendering of how the zebra got its stripes in the African tale The Greedy Zebra by Adrienne Kennaway. Using cooperation skills honed in Open Circle, the children create a zoo inside a giant Z after reading Mem Fox’x Zoo Looking. Finally, we enjoy two delightful tales retold by Margot Zemach – It Could Always Be Worse and The Three Wishes.

We spend lots of time working on special books for the fabulous dads of Jr. K. The children put so much love and effort into these projects – a reflection of what they get from you!

This completes our Alphabet Journals that we have been working on since September. It is full of the tactile experiences connected with the most common sound for each letter. As the year progressed, the children were able to include many more letters and words as they labeled their illustrations. They are very proud of how hard they worked and how much they have learned! It has been an amazing year and a wonderful journey for all of us in Jr. K.
