March News

With red rice and ripped red paper, the children in Jr. K continue to acquire the letter-sound relationship as they begin to read and write. With the help of Little Red Riding Hood and The Little Red Hen, they reinforce re-telling, sequencing, and following multi-step directions as they complete activities related to these tales. We read Red is Best, a story about Kelly who will only wear things that are red and talk about our favorite colors. We read a ridiculous story about a rhinoceros and his friends who accompany a little boy throughout his day. The children play a memory game matching the animals and their beginning sounds. They learn to use a ruler to measure height, length, and width. Finally, we have fun with rhyming words and familiar Nursery Rhymes. We enjoy Read Across America week by honoring Dr. Seuss and his contribution to literacy. Finally, the children recycle boxes of different shapes to make a group project.

We continue the month with Cc as in crazy crayons that we use to color with. We cut different shapes to colorful clowns and build colossal castles with blocks. The children review their measuring skills for length and height after enjoying the African tale The Crocodile and the Ostrich. We enjoy a cache of stories – Catch That Dog, Caps for Sale, and Milwaukee Cows. We read the Clifford books and do an author study of Eric Carle. The highlight of the unit is reading Creature Feature by David Drew and completing a template of questions to describe their own creatures.

We finish the month with Kk as we remark on the March winds that fly our kites. We hop with kangaroos and climb with koalas as we measure how far they jump and climb. We use keys to pattern, pair, and count by twos. We enjoy the beautiful illustrations and story line of Verna Aardema’s Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain as well as a selection of stories by Steven Kellogg. Finally, Making Kk from Kix and enjoying their crunchy taste make this a delicious week!
